What a mixer is and why it is risky
A mixer (tumbler) is a service that blends coins from many users to break the link between sender and receiver. It is a primary crypto laundering tool, which is why exchanges and payment providers treat such funds with caution.
In the scoring methodology a mixer belongs to the danger group — direct criminal and prohibited sources, alongside darknet markets, stolen coins and sanctioned addresses.
How it is detected
The check traces the origin of funds on the address and matches counterparties against databases of known services. If part of the inflow came from addresses attributed to a mixer, that share lands in the mixer signal.
One limitation matters: on networks with limited support clustering is unavailable, and a risk score is only returned if the counterparty is recognised as a known entity. The list of networks with support levels is on a separate page.
What to do when a mixer is found
The decision depends on your risk policy: typical options are to request proof of source of funds, send the operation to manual review, or reject it. The service provides the score and the source breakdown; the decision stays with you.
It is worth screening an address before crediting funds rather than after: screening at the gateway lets you avoid accepting problematic inflows in the first place.
